Navigating the UK’s New Entry Requirements: GOMO Travel Guide

GOMO TravelTravel Tips

Planning a hop across the pond in 2025? GOMO Travel is here to ensure your British adventure starts smoothly with the latest updates to the UK’s new entry requirements. Beginning January 8, 2025, U.S. travelers must now secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before setting foot on British soil – even if you’re just catching a connecting flight at Heathrow.

What’s Changing?

The UK is modernizing its borders with a system similar to the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This new requirement affects all U.S. citizens planning short visits, whether for tourism or business, to any part of the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland. At GOMO Travel, we’re already incorporating this essential step into our comprehensive trip-planning services.

ETA Essentials

Here’s what you need to know about the new Electronic Travel Authorization:

The process is straightforward but requires a little advance planning. The ETA costs £10 (approximately $12.75) and remains valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. GOMO Travel recommends applying at least three weeks before your departure date, as processing can take up to three working days.

Remember, this requirement applies to travelers of all ages – yes, even your toddler needs one! However, if you already have a UK visa, an exempt vignette, or hold a British or Irish passport, you’re exempt from this requirement.

You can apply for your ETA using the official UK ETA App on your phone.

You need:

  • The passport you will travel with – not a photocopy or digital passport
  • Access to your emails
  • A credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay

You will need to upload or take photos of:

  • Your passport
  • The face of the person applying

You do not need to enter your travel details.

If you cannot use the app, you can also apply online.

GOMO’s UK Travel Tips

  1. Apply Early
Don’t wait until the last minute. While processing typically takes up to three days, unexpected delays can occur.
  2. Double-Check Details
Ensure all information matches your passport exactly. Even minor discrepancies can cause delays or denials.
  3. Family Planning
Remember that each family member, regardless of age, needs their own ETA.
  4. Connecting Flights
Even if you’re just transferring through a UK airport, you’ll need an ETA. GOMO can help determine if your itinerary requires one during the planning process of your trip.

This change represents part of the UK’s broader move toward a digital border system. GOMO Travel remains committed to staying ahead of international travel requirements and ensuring our clients enjoy worry-free journeys.
